The Sazerac Rye whiskey, named after the Sazerac Coffee House in New Orleans - the place of origin of the Sazerac cocktail, is produced at the Buffalo Trace distillery in Kentucky. It is matured for six years in newly burnt American white oak barrels and the bottle design is inspired by the period before the American Civil War.

The Buffalo Trace distillery, which has been in operation since 1857 and was named after a historic buffalo trail, was one of the six distilleries granted a licence to produce alcohol for medicinal purposes during Prohibition between 1920 and 1933. Today, in addition to Sazerac Rye, the distillery also produces other well-known brands such as Buffalo Trace, Blanton's, Eagle Rare, E.H. Taylor and Pappy van Winkle.
