Description
The Winkler-Hermaden winery, idyllically situated on the Kapfensteiner Kogel in south-east Styria, extends over 40 hectares of vineyards. Georg Winkler-Hermaden took over management from his father Burkhardt in 1977, expanding the estate from its original 4 hectares to 38 hectares. He has run the winery together with his wife Margot since 1986. In 2009, the entire agricultural area was converted to organic farming, which increased biodiversity and improved the quality of the wine. In addition, the 80 hectares of family-owned forest have provided enough oak wood for 30 years to age the wine in wooden barrels.
This wine is dedicated to Field Marshal Lieutenant Arthur Winkler, who fought in Northern Italy, specifically in Hermaden, during the First World War in 1917. In gratitude for his service, Kaiser Karl I awarded him the title of nobility. Arthur Winkler chose the name "Winkler von Hermaden" to commemorate the battles in Hermaden.
Winkler-Hermaden Hermada combines the Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir grape varieties. The grapes ripen on nutrient-rich brown soil interspersed with volcanic material and were carefully harvested between September and October 2017. They were matured for 24 months in oak barrels from Kapfenstein, which gives the wine its characteristic depth and complexity. It is sealed with a practical screw cap for storage and enjoyment.
