The Penfolds BIN 2 Shiraz Mataro 2019 is based on a characteristic cuvée of Shiraz and Mataro, which has a long history in Australia and yet is comparatively rare. The Penfolds BIN 2 line was first presented in 1960 and was originally understood as a medium-bodied "Australian Burgundy" style, although the grape varieties traditionally come from the Rhône region. The series was temporarily discontinued during the white wine boom of the 1970s, but was later reintroduced due to the increasing interest in classic Rhône varieties.

The 2019 vintage was produced under challenging conditions: low rainfall, high summer temperatures and the cooling effect of the Southern Ocean resulted in lower yields but high-quality grapes. The origin from Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Wrattonbully and Padthaway gives this wine a clear regional character. The wine was matured for nine months in French and American oak, both new and used barrels.

The cuvée is made up of 86 per cent Shiraz and 14 per cent Mataro, with Mataro - established in Australia since the 1830s - providing structure, depth and additional complexity. The targeted use of wood supports the straightforward, no-nonsense style that has defined Penfolds BIN 2 for decades. The Penfolds BIN 2 Shiraz Mataro 2019 thus stands for a modern, classically structured Australian red wine that consistently reflects its origin, vintage and grape variety character and is firmly anchored in the premium segment of Australian table wines.
