Description
The Marchesi Antinori Castello della Sala Pinot Nero 2023 is an expressive Italian quality red wine that impressively demonstrates the potential of Pinot Nero in central Italy. Produced by the traditional Marchesi Antinori estate at the historic Castello della Sala, this wine comes from Umbria, close to the border with Tuscany and around 18 kilometres from Orvieto. The medieval Castello is surrounded by extensive estates with vineyards at altitudes of between 220 and 470 metres.
Although Castello della Sala is traditionally known for great white wines, Pinot Nero finds exceptional conditions here. The vines grow on calcareous and clayey soils interspersed with shell fossils and sandy sediments from the Pliocene. The plots at an altitude of over 400 metres in particular benefit from pronounced day-night temperature differences, which promote freshness, elegance and precision. To protect the sensitive grapes from the intense summer sun, the shoots are deliberately trained long and bent over the vines so that the foliage provides natural shade. The wine has been vinified exclusively from Pinot Nero since 1990 and is considered the red counterpart to the legendary Cervaro della Sala.
With 13.5% alcohol by volume, the 2023 vintage is balanced, finely structured and characterised by its terroir. Bottled in a 0.75-litre bottle, this Pinot Nero stands for elegance, origin and precise style.
