Matthew Gloag, the grandson of the founder and the brand’s namesake, took over the family business in 1896, almost a century after it was founded in 1800.

Just one year later, he created a new whisky blend, which he called ‘The Grouse Brand’, anticipating that many hunters would stop off in Perth during the hunting season. His daughter designed the accompanying label, which features Scotland’s national bird, the grouse. The whisky enjoyed immediate popularity and sold so well that, after just a few years, the name was changed to ‘The Famous Grouse’, with the word ‘Brand’ dropped.

This whisky is the successor to the well-known ‘The Black Grouse’ and is characterised by a higher proportion of peated malts, including a rare bottling from The Glenturret. These carefully selected, peaty malts give ‘Smoky Black’ its characteristic smoky yet smooth flavour. The profile is complemented by exceptional grain whiskies, which harmoniously round off the flavour and lend the whisky its distinctive depth and complexity.
