In the mid-17th century, a representative of the French Crown acquired large tracts of land on the island and established three vast sugar cane plantations there, which formed the basis for later rum production. At the start of the 20th century, the decisive step was taken from sugar production to the production of rhum agricole – a rum made not from molasses but from fresh sugarcane juice.
