Description
Description
The 2017 Heinrich Salzberg, 13.5% ABV, in a 0.75-litre bottle, is one of Austria’s most legendary red wines and has been regarded for decades as the benchmark for great Austrian red wine blends. With the Salzberg, the renowned Weingut Heinrich has created a cult wine that enjoys recognition far beyond the country’s borders. Since its first release, hardly any other Austrian red wine has had such a lasting impact on the wine scene. This strictly limited-edition cuvée is regularly sold out before it even reaches the shops and is one of Burgenland’s most sought-after wines.
The wine takes its name from the historic Salzberg vineyard in Gols, one of the region’s oldest and finest hillside sites. The south-west-facing vineyards are characterised by red terraced gravel dating back to the Ice Age, which provides the vines with optimal conditions. The 2017 vintage consists of 50% Merlot and 50% Blaufränkisch and received an impressive 98 Falstaff points, the highest rating for an Austrian red wine cuvée from this vintage. Following vinification, the wine matured for 30 months in new 500-litre wooden barrels, allowing it to develop additional complexity, structure and longevity. With its enormous ageing potential until at least 2037, the Salzberg 2017 stands out as a great Austrian red wine for discerning connoisseurs and collectors.
