Description
The Bozal Single Maguey Cuishe Mezcal Artesanal is one of the most distinctive wild agave mezcals from Oaxaca and is made exclusively from the rare Cuishe agave, a subspecies of the Karwinskii family. This agave is instantly recognisable by its distinctive, vertically growing stem: it forms a long, slender body with a crown of leaves at the top and takes around twelve years to reach full maturity. Due to this unusual shape, the stem contains particularly firm, well-structured piña, which makes harvesting and processing significantly more challenging. The result is a Single Maguey Mezcal with a unique aroma, characterised by tropical, floral and, at the same time, mineral notes.
This mezcal is produced using strictly traditional, artisanal methods: the agave hearts are cooked in earthen pit ovens, ground using a donkey-drawn tahona, and then fermented in open vats with naturally occurring yeast. Double distillation preserves the authentic character of the Cuishe agave. The iconic deep-blue Bozal ceramic bottle reflects the single-maguey philosophy and evokes a tactile connection to the artisanal production process. The name Bozal, which means ‘wild’ or ‘untamed’, pays tribute to the traditional production methods of the mezcaleros from the remote regions of Oaxaca, Guerrero and Durango.
