Description
Bozal Single Maguey Tepeztate Mezcal Artesanal is one of the most distinctive agave spirits from Oaxaca and is made exclusively from the wild Tepeztate agave, a rare subspecies of the Marmorata family. This agave thrives on steep, rocky cliffs and, at the end of its long life cycle, produces impressive, yellow-flowering quiotes. Due to its highly irregular foliage and extremely slow growth, Tepeztate is one of the wild agaves with the strongest character of all. Its profile is powerful, floral and characterised by natural intensity, which is impressively reflected in this Single Maguey Mezcal.
This mezcal is produced according to strict artisanal traditions. The agave hearts are cooked in earthen pit ovens, then crushed using a horse-drawn tahona, and subsequently fermented in open wooden vats with wild, naturally occurring yeast. Double distillation preserves the unadulterated character of this rare agave. The distinctive Bozal ceramic bottle in a rich blue hue references its single-maguey origin and emphasises the spirit’s authentic, untamed identity. The name Bozal, meaning ‘wild’ or ‘untamed’, is a deliberate tribute to the inaccessible regions of Oaxaca, Guerrero and Durango, as well as to the mezcaleros who have upheld these traditions for centuries.
