VAT 69 is a blended Scotch whisky that holds its own amongst well-known brands such as Johnnie Walker, Chivas Regal, Grant's Whisky and Ballantine's Whisky. Produced in Edinburgh, VAT 69 combines the long tradition of Scotch whisky production with the consistent quality of modern distilling techniques. Since 1863, Sanderson has been producing this whisky, amongst other spirits, which is bottled in port wine bottles.

The creation of VAT 69 was the result of an extensive selection process, during which William Sanders and his son developed numerous blends. The blend ultimately selected, which came from cask number 69, impressed with its balanced and robust flavour profile and was established as the foundation for the VAT 69 brand. The name derives from the cask number and the distillation process, with ‘VAT’ referring to the English word for a mixing vessel.

Bottling of the whisky did not begin until 1880, after William Mark Sanders had persuaded his father to market the whisky beyond simply selling it by the cask. This innovation represented a significant development in the whisky industry. The choice of a port wine bottle for bottling VAT 69 offered practical advantages and contributed to the product’s unique presentation.
