Description
The history of Smirnoff Vodka began in 1910 when Vladimir Smirnov took over the company following the death of his father, Pyotr Smirnov. During the October Revolution, the distillery was confiscated and the family were forced to flee to Constantinople, where Vladimir set up a new distillery. Four years later, the family moved to Lviv; in 1925, the spelling of the name was changed to Smirnoff, and by the late 1930s, Smirnoff was being exported to most European countries. In 1934, Vladimir Smirnov sold the company to Rudolph Kunett, who relocated the company’s headquarters to the USA. Smirnoff is now part of Diageo and ranks among the world’s best-selling vodkas. Incidentally, Smirnoff was the first distillery in the world to use charcoal for filtration.
In the mid-1990s, the decision was taken to revive Smirnoff Vodka Black Label based on its traditional recipe. This exceptional vodka is distilled in small batches in a copper still over 150 years old, using only the finest grains. The meticulous production process, combined with a unique charcoal filtration method, gives the vodka its distinctive characteristics.
Compared with conventional production methods, the alcohol yield from this labour-intensive process is significantly lower; however, this benefits the original grain flavours and preserves them as well as possible.
