Big Peat is a blended malt whisky created by combining malt essences from four renowned distilleries on the island of Islay. Behind this exceptional blend is Douglas Laing & Co., a company founded in 1948 by Fred Douglas Laing. In the early 1970s, he handed the business over to his sons, Stewart and Fred Laing, who ran it together for many years. In 2013, however, they went their separate ways, with Stewart setting up a new company, whilst Big Peat, along with other well-known whiskies, remained with Douglas Laing & Co.

To produce Big Peat, the Bowmore, Port Ellen, Ardbeg and Caol Ila distilleries supply their distillates to the brand’s headquarters. The island of Islay, known for its rugged moorland, shapes the whisky’s unique character with its sedimentary peat. As wood is a scarce resource in Scotland, peat is traditionally used as fuel, giving the whisky its characteristic smoky aroma. This aroma is a hallmark of Islay whiskies and reflects the centuries-old tradition of whisky-making.
