Description
The iconic Redbreast brand, which has been produced by the Jameson Distillery since 1939, originally for Gilbey’s, has a long and fascinating history. Originally, Gilbey’s aged the whisky in its own casks, which gave Redbreast its unique character. This whisky belongs to the rare category of single pot still whisky, a distinct category alongside blended and single malt whiskies.
This particular method of whisky production originated in Ireland in the 19th century, when a way was sought to circumvent the high taxes on malt. It involves using a blend of malted and unmalted barley, which gives the whisky its unmistakable depth and complexity. After Gilbey’s ceased production in 1985, Redbreast also temporarily disappeared from the market. However, the brand made a comeback and went on to become one of the most popular Irish whiskies.
The 18-year-old Redbreast is a masterful creation that bridges the gap between the 15-year-old and the 21-year-old Redbreast. It is matured in a carefully balanced combination of bourbon casks, cream sherry casks and ruby port casks. This blend gives it a multi-layered aroma that harmoniously combines notes of vanilla, dried fruit and spices. Redbreast 18 is a true delight for connoisseurs who appreciate the full, rich flavour of a traditional Irish whisky.
