Description
The Winkler-Hermaden Winery, idyllically situated on the Kapfensteiner Kogel in south-eastern Styria, covers 40 hectares of vineyards. Georg Winkler-Hermaden took over the running of the estate from his father, Burkhardt, in 1977, expanding it from its original 4 to 38 hectares. Since 1986, he has been running the winery together with his wife Margot. In 2009, the entire agricultural area was converted to organic farming, which increased biodiversity and improved the quality of the wine. In addition, the family’s 80 hectares of woodland have been providing enough oak for 30 years to age the wine in wooden barrels.
With the ‘Olivin’, the Winkler-Hermaden winery presents an outstanding red wine made from the Blauer Zweigelt grape variety. These grapes grow on lime-free, loose sedimentary brown earth with incorporated volcanic material, which lends the wine its distinctive character. It is particularly noteworthy that the oak used for the barriques in which the wine matures also grows on the same soil, in the same climate and on the Kapfensteiner Kogel.
Following a month-long maceration, the Olivin is aged for 24 months in 300-litre barriques made from Kapfensteiner oak. After careful ageing, the wine is bottled and sealed with natural corks. The “Olivin” has an ageing potential until 2036, by which time its aromas will have fully developed.
For over 30 years, the “Olivin” has been counted amongst Styria’s finest red wines, which underlines its outstanding quality and consistency.
