Although no original bottles from Jerry Thomas’s era have survived, it is widely accepted that Bogart’s was a contemporary variant of Boker’s Bitters. Even before other bitters found their way into cocktail recipes worldwide, Bogart’s/Boker’s was the definitive standard. As early as 1888, the first printed Martini cocktail recipe explicitly called for the use of “genuine Bogart’s/Boker’s”, which points to its enormous popularity and the existence of inferior imitations. Over a period of more than ten years, The Bitter Truth has conducted extensive research and analysis, based on an extremely rare original bottle from around 1900 containing authentic contents.
