Description
The Bruichladdich ORGANIC BARLEY Islay Single Malt 2012 50% consistently highlights the origin of its barley and demonstrates the influence that organic farming can have on the character of a whisky. For this Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky made from organic barley, Bruichladdich uses exclusively Scottish Publican barley from Mid Coul Farms near Inverness. The farm operates a closed-loop fertility system, in which organic by-products are returned to the agricultural cycle. The barley is grown according to organic principles, without synthetic agrochemicals or pesticides. After harvest, it is sent as unpeated malt to the Bruichladdich Distillery on Islay, where it was slowly distilled in 2012. This vintage bottling is therefore a prime example of Bruichladdich’s focus on terroir, sustainable agriculture and traceable raw material origins.
The Bruichladdich Organic Barley 2012 was then matured for ten years exclusively on Islay in 100 per cent first-fill bourbon casks. The American oak complements the distinctly malty character of the organic barley without overpowering its individuality, and lends additional depth and structure. At a robust 50% ABV, the whisky retains its intense texture and is ideal for consciously comparing the influences of the grain, the cask and the origin. Within the Organic Barley range, a distinct style has developed across various vintages, in which the barley itself takes centre stage far more prominently than in many conventional single malts. The 0.7-litre bottle makes this 10-year-old organic single malt from Bruichladdich an exciting bottling for lovers of unpeated Islay whiskies with a clear provenance and a pronounced grain character.
