Description
The 2017 Heinrich Salzberg, 13.5% ABV, in a 1.5-litre magnum bottle, is one of the greatest icons of Austrian red wine production and is regarded as one of the country’s most sought-after wines. With the Salzberg, the renowned Weingut Heinrich has created a cult wine that has set new standards since its launch and has had a lasting impact on the Austrian red wine scene. This strictly limited cuvée is in high demand year after year and is often sold out before it officially goes on sale. The 2017 vintage follows seamlessly on from the great successes of its predecessors and, like the legendary 2000 vintage before it, has been awarded an outstanding 98 Falstaff points.
It takes its name from the historic Salzberg vineyard in Gols, one of the finest and oldest hillside sites in Burgenland. The south-west-facing vineyards are characterised by red terraced gravel dating back to the Ice Age, which provides the ideal conditions for red wines with a distinctive character. The cuvée, comprising 50% Merlot and 50% Blaufränkisch, combines international elegance with regional character. Following vinification, the wine matured for 30 months in new 500-litre barriques, during which time it developed its impressive structure, depth and ageing potential. In the magnum bottle, the wine also benefits from a particularly slow and harmonious maturation. The Salzberg 2017 is a great wine for contemplation with enormous potential for development and is undoubtedly among the very best of Austrian red wine-making.
