The Gesellmann Opus Eximium No. 35 2022 is a masterful Austrian red wine cuvée from Burgenland, bearing the hallmark of the long-established Gesellmann winery. For over three decades, the ‘Opus Eximium’ has been recomposed year after year, with each vintage reflecting the unique characteristics of that particular year. The 2022 cuvée consists of 60% Blaufränkisch, 30% Zweigelt and 10% St. Laurent – three grape varieties typical of the Carnuntum region and Burgenland, which are vinified here to the highest standard.


The grapes come from vines aged between 30 and 70 years, which develop their characteristic intensity as they are deeply rooted in mineral-rich soils. The hand-harvest began at the end of September with the St. Laurent, followed by the Zweigelt, and ended at the start of October with the Blaufränkisch. Each grape variety was vinified separately. Following spontaneous fermentation and traditional maceration in steel tanks, malolactic fermentation took place in oak barrels. The wine then matured for 24 months in small oak barrels before being blended as a cuvée and aged for a further two months in a large wooden cask. It will finally be bottled in June 2025. With an alcohol content of 14.5% vol., it is powerful, complex and yet elegant – a wine with great ageing potential.
