Description
The Winkler-Hermaden Olivin 2021 14% ABV 0.75 l is a characterful Zweigelt from Styria and ranks among the most distinctive red wines produced by the long-established Winkler-Hermaden winery, situated around Kapfenstein Castle. The name ‘Olivin’ refers to the semi-precious stone of the same name, which occurs as a green crystal in the basalt rock of the Kapfensteiner Kogel and symbolically reflects the connection between the earth, the vine and the wood. The grapes for this Austrian quality wine, made from the Blauer Zweigelt grape variety, come from various vineyards on the Kapfensteiner Kogel, whose volcanic soils lend the wine its structure and character.
The wine is vinified as a dry wine and matures for 24 months in barriques made from Kapfensteiner oak, the wood for which comes from the region’s own soils and climate. This unique provenance shapes the distinctive style of this Zweigelt red wine from south-eastern Styria. The wine is produced using organic methods, is suitable for vegans and is sealed with an organic glass stopper. The grapes were harvested between 23 and 29 September 2020, and the wine was bottled on 25 May 2023. With an alcohol content of 14% vol., a recommended serving temperature of 16–18 °C and an ageing potential from around 2027 to 2037, this 33rd vintage of Olivin is a powerful yet elegant red wine from Styria.
