The Bunnahabhain 12 Years Old Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky is the time-honoured entry point to the Bunnahabhain Distillery’s core range and represents a style that is unusual for Islay. Whilst the Scottish island is primarily known for intensely peated whiskies, Bunnahabhain is particularly renowned for its unpeated Islay single malt with a subtle maritime character. The whisky is matured for at least 12 years in a combination of bourbon and sherry casks, allowing different cask influences to blend with the distillery’s characteristic style. The Bunnahabhain 12 Years Old is bottled at a robust 46.3% ABV. Of particular note are its natural colour and the absence of chill filtration, ensuring the whisky is presented as authentically as possible.


The Bunnahabhain Distillery is situated in the north of Islay, right on the strait between Islay and the island of Jura. Until 1960, the remote distillery was accessible only by boat; today, a single-lane road leads to the site. A technical feature of the distillery is its large, pear-shaped pot stills with particularly long swan necks, which are among the tallest on Islay. This design promotes the reflux of heavier components, thereby contributing to the distillate’s comparatively lighter and more delicate character. The combination of 12 years’ maturation, bourbon and sherry casks, unpeated distillate and the coastal location makes the Bunnahabhain 12 a distinctive representative of the island.
